Before they were called jean jackets, denim jackets were called pleated blouses. The front pleats reminiscent of the 1800s were made without shrink-proofing at the time, so if the garment shrunk after washing, the pleats could be undone to expand the width. These details, which have outlived their usefulness due to technological innovation, remain as part of the design today.
